The Status Of The United States - 1138 Words

An ascribed status is the social status that a person is assigned at birth. Thus, the position is neither earned nor chosen. Rodriguez and Guzman argue that race in the U.S. is understood as an ascribed status because a person is assigned a race at birth -- you cannot choose or earn your race. Additionally, race in the United States is unchangeable. This is even true for when a person goes to different countries. For example, even though a person might be considered white in one country, if he or she is considered black in America, to America, they will always be black. Furthermore, Rodriguez and Guzman wrote that the way race is understood in America disallows or ignores more contextual definitions of race. The ascribed status race has in America means that what is believed to be in your blood when you are born is what you will be for the rest of your life. 3. How is race in Puerto Rico, similar or different from the U.S.? (compare the two) In America, race is seen as being biologically/genetically based. However, in Puerto Rico, while race may have blood lines as a referent, there are other dimensions brought into the racial classification of people, such as class, physical type, and ethnic background, according to Rodriguez and Guzman. In Puerto Rico, there is a socio-economic concept of race that is based on time and context. Motivation Letter And Research Objectives Essay - 1506 Words

Motivation Letter and Research Objectives Perseverance is the key to success; no hurdles can stop a determined person to succeed. I started school; the most prosperous period of my learning period abroad from my country, in a different culture, having access to a lot of facilities like electricity, and electronic devices which after returning to my homeland and getting used of them I realized how precious these facilities were. After collapse of the Taliban regime in 2002 when we returned to Afghanistan, I was ready to walk a distance of six miles under the burning sun in the far village of Wardak Province of Afghanistan to go back and forth to school. While realizing how much our nation’s struggles are, I learned that most of our community’s sufferings were due to the lack of electricity , paved roads, distance from the hospital, limited transportation to schools in the area, crops dying because of floods in the spring and water scarcit y in later times of the year. I thought about how I can help and it was then that I decided to become an engineer. Many times people who feel a different way than ov Essay Example For Students

Many times people who feel a different way than ov Essay erruling powers do not take a stand to how they feel and they cower down. In the cases where people due fight back for their cause good things will prosper from it. Even if you do not want to be taking part in war or any other activity that does not please you, sometimes people have to go against themselves for something they know is right. In the play A Man for All Seasons by Roger Bolt and the book All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque Thomas More will not abide by the kings rules, and keeps his own beliefs despite the pressure being put on him, and Paul Baummer hates every minute of war, but he knows he is serving the right purpose and continues to battle. When you that the person ruling over you is wrong and you stand up for what is right in your heart, you will face severe punishments but will have portrayed your point with power. Thomas More had an incredible amount of will power to stay strong and not give in to beliefs he did not believe in. As bad as it would get to seem from his perspective, More would not give up his morals, and he would rather be killed than be forced to believe in something he does not feel is right in his heart. I am faint when I think of the worst that they may do to me. But worse then that would be to go with you not understanding why I go (144) After all the threats had been made to More about the death penalty it would bring his spirits down and make him sad. As sad as it made him he would not give in. On the other side we had Paul who faced a similar situation. The more he got in to the war the sadder is made him. He had to keep shoving on and keep working though. At times he did not want to do anything but he forced himself to stay confident as hard as it was. I am young, I am twenty years old; yet I now nothing of life but despair, death, fear, and fatuous superficiality cast over an abyss of sorrow.(263) Paul has no end to his sorrow he it is this sad. His feelings of emptiness run on forever and he has no warmth or good feelings inside him. Yet he somehow finds a way to battle and keep fighting because he knows that is right. More and Paul both had a situation where they did not want to do what they did, but they knew in the bottom of there hear it was right. During the times of battle Paul was very courageous and brave. Sometimes his heart and his mind would not be one hundred percent confident but he was out there battling and fighting with all he had. During one specific battle he was being attacked and bombed in a cemetery and one of his fellow soldiers was hurt and needed assistance. Paul didn’t hesitate to throw him over his shoulder and find the nearest place to lie down and escape from the outside danger. This was ironic because hiding in a cemetery saved his life, which is where they have all people, which have passed away. Thomas More has the same kind of bravery and boldness, it was showed in a different way though. When More suspected things were going bad and he didn’t want to be involved in it he immediately resigned as Lord Chancellor. This showed how brave he was to step down from his position even though he knew that it was going to bring his living style down and affect his life in a major way. More and Pau l did not encounter the same problem but they both showed great courage and true colors by taking a chance which they did not know the result of. .u31e4a96e181ed9e346bda88eb90c169c , .u31e4a96e181ed9e346bda88eb90c169c .postImageUrl , .u31e4a96e181ed9e346bda88eb90c169c .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u31e4a96e181ed9e346bda88eb90c169c , .u31e4a96e181ed9e346bda88eb90c169c:hover , .u31e4a96e181ed9e346bda88eb90c169c:visited , .u31e4a96e181ed9e346bda88eb90c169c:active { border:0!important; } .u31e4a96e181ed9e346bda88eb90c169c .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u31e4a96e181ed9e346bda88eb90c169c { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u31e4a96e181ed9e346bda88eb90c169c:active , .u31e4a96e181ed9e346bda88eb90c169c:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u31e4a96e181ed9e346bda88eb90c169c .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u31e4a96e181ed9e346bda88eb90c169c .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u31e4a96e181ed9e346bda88eb90c169c .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u31e4a96e181ed9e346bda88eb90c169c .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u31e4a96e181ed9e346bda88eb90c169c:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u31e4a96e181ed9e346bda88eb90c169c .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u31e4a96e181ed9e346bda88eb90c169c .u31e4a96e181ed9e346bda88eb90c169c-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u31e4a96e181ed9e346bda88eb90c169c:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Martin Luther King Jr vs Malcolm X EssayThomas More was a man of class and dignity and he did not fold to the pressure he was under. Dead Men Do Tell Tales Essay Example For Students

Dead Men Do Tell Tales Essay For nearly a century the science of forensics has grown from a barely understood art to a marvel of modern science. From development of finger printing in the early 1900s, to DNA gene matching of today, forensic pathology and anthropology have blossomed into the laws best weapons against criminals that stalk our world. In Dead Men Do Tell Tales we enter the world of Dr. William Maples, PhD of the C A Pound Human Identification Center in Gainesville, Florida-an often brutal and ghoulish realm of dismembered corpses, hastily torched cremains of hapless victims or those dumped in septic tanks to rot and putrefy in the other detritus of mans remains. Dr. Maples own study is the field of forensic anthropology-the study of the human skeleton, and this mans expertise in that field has cemented my interest in amateur study of forensics. Told in the first person, Maples comes across as brilliant and personable, if a little supremely confident in his own abilities as an investigator. And like Stephen Hawkings A Brief History of Time, isnt afraid to admit when he has erred. Where the book shines, aside from its plethora of information, is in the presentation of that information-Maple never uses terms that he doesnt explain, knowing full well that the book is going to be read more by laymen like me than a peer within the profession. So do not expect detailed treatises on anatomy, pathology or pages of chemical breakdowns. Instead, Maples presents an easy to understand work that is surprising in its level of detail, and a credit to himself and his co-author, Michael Browning, for making it understandable. Though it is a book on anthropology, one cannot write about one subject without at least touch on the pathology end, since the two are intimately related. After explaining his own origins from his birth in Dallas, Texas, his schooling and odd jobs he held in order to pay for his college-mostly that of riding shot gun in an ambulance while working for a mortuary as they sped from accident to accident, trying to scoop business away from competing funeral homes. He majored in English, but took a course on anthropology on a lark at the suggestion of his university counselor. In so doing he met Tom McKern, who impressed Maples with his skill as a teacher, mentoring himself to the older professor. Past the first chapter we enter Maples job, past his trapping baboons in Africa in 1960s to his eventual relocation as Gainesville and the CA Pound offices there. Florida, he describes, is a living organism with highways making up its arterial system, and a place where criminals, like blood cells, pass through, dumping their often mutilated cargo of human debris. In many ways I believe he softened the blow in his descriptions of finding the body of man in a septic tank where it had been for over a decade or that of three murdered drug dealers near a golf course who had been  executed by fellow criminals then unceremoniously tossed into a pit to be buried. Mere words cannot describe these gruesome atrocities, but he makes it clear that while it doesnt bother him anymore, it does turn even the hardest cop green with nausea. His affinity with tools, since they are so often used as murder weapons, has led him to collect quite an assortment of hatchets, crow bars, hammers, saws-and could often be found in the hardware department at Sears looking at tools, trying to find the right one that matches the damaged bone. His expertise in this field enabled him to study John Merricks remains-the Elephant Man of the 19th century, and even to Russia where he examined the skeletonized remains of Tsar Nicholas and his family, almost seventy years after they were murdered by Bolsheviks during the 1917 revolution. All of this experience-almost forty years before his death in 1999, has set Maples in his ways. He possesses a strong, passionate belief that there is true evil in the world, and that somehow the world is better off without certain murderers around; though this is tempered by his own research into the most humane ways to execute someone. .u99f4d5fdb2125730f2738e7c2b162c84 , .u99f4d5fdb2125730f2738e7c2b162c84 .postImageUrl , .u99f4d5fdb2125730f2738e7c2b162c84 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u99f4d5fdb2125730f2738e7c2b162c84 , .u99f4d5fdb2125730f2738e7c2b162c84:hover , .u99f4d5fdb2125730f2738e7c2b162c84:visited , .u99f4d5fdb2125730f2738e7c2b162c84:active { border:0!important; } .u99f4d5fdb2125730f2738e7c2b162c84 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u99f4d5fdb2125730f2738e7c2b162c84 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u99f4d5fdb2125730f2738e7c2b162c84:active , .u99f4d5fdb2125730f2738e7c2b162c84:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u99f4d5fdb2125730f2738e7c2b162c84 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u99f4d5fdb2125730f2738e7c2b162c84 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u99f4d5fdb2125730f2738e7c2b162c84 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u99f4d5fdb2125730f2738e7c2b162c84 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u99f4d5fdb2125730f2738e7c2b162c84:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u99f4d5fdb2125730f2738e7c2b162c84 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u99f4d5fdb2125730f2738e7c2b162c84 .u99f4d5fdb2125730f2738e7c2b162c84-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u99f4d5fdb2125730f2738e7c2b162c84:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Fahrenheit 451 Essay ThesisDead Men Do Tell Tales is a fascinating, enjoyable read-captivating in its insights in forensic pathology and anthropology in a language that everyone can understand. It gives the novice reader in the field a general understanding of the chemical changes our bodies go through as they decompose, the organs and other bodily system are rendered down in the earth-by insects and animals, and how evidence is gleaned off bones-chisel marks, bullet holes, little nicks and scratches that can tell the investigator what tool was used, and a little insight from Maples point of view of the people who used them. It is a fascinating, engrossing book that anyone with a reasonably strong stomach should be able to enjoy. Its a fiitting testimony to a highly skilled man who is sadly no longer with us. Thank you, Dr. Maples.

Shakespeare reveals Essay Example For Students

Shakespeare reveals Essay Consider the means by which Shakespeare reveals character in the episode.  In the second act of The Tempest Shakespeare takes the opportunity to develop the characters of Prospero and Miranda to the audience.  Prospero is set out to the audience as some kind of supreme power, after the audience learn just before this extract that it was his magic, and not simply a hostile nature tat raised the storm in scene 1. The Tempest is a play about power as we observed in the previous scene, when the power of the storm disrupted the power relations between nobles and servants and Prospero is set out as the central force controlling and manipulating events throughout the play. During this extract Shakespeare informs the audience or Prosperos power but also of his wisdom and love for his daughter, he states I have doe nothing but in care of thee to Miranda alerting the audience to the fact that in spite of the fact that prospero has just caused a shipwreck he is a moral man presumably acting for his own reasons. This may be done to prevent the audience immediately labelling Prospero as a villain, Prosperos compassion is further enforced which he informs Miranda of the fact that he has insured that he has prevented any of the people aboard the wreck to come to any kind of harm. This also creates prolepsis as it indicated that Prospero has something planned. Prosperos wisdom and power are conveyed to the audience when he describes himself as A prince of power and also master of a full poor cell.  In contrast to Prosperos emitted aura of power and wisdom Miranda is meant to be seen as the epitome of compassion and innocence. These characteristics are indicated to the audience both by Miranda ignorance of her situation Art ignorant of whet thou art and by hr apparent lack of thirst for further information More to know did never medal with my thoughts. In modern times this would probably be seen as naivety however during the late Tudor period when this play was written the view of the ideal woman was still very focused around the image Miranda adheres to, one of purity, empathy and respect towards both farther (As is indicated in this scene) and husband. During this section of the play Miranda is also set out to appear very young, and willing to leave her destiny in control of her father, later on seems to take more control of the events around her (such as when she proposes marriage to Ferdinand) however at this point she is still very emotional in a more child like manner O! Woe the day! This also helps to show her compassion since she is clearly so concerned for the safety of the people on the ship in spite of the fact that she is unaware of who they are.  In conclusion Shakespeare utilises this scene to set out the key elements of both Mirandas personalities, however it is not until later in the play that there characters are properly developed.
